Senior Methodist Girls' School, Kuala Lumpur The Senior Methodist Girls' School of Kuala Lumpur is a government-assisted school and is 113 years old this year. It was one of the earliest all-girls school in the country established by the Government and was called The Government Girls' School then. Mrs. Stratton-Brown who came from America was appointed the first headmistress of the school. In 1900, the government appealed to the Methodist Mission to take over the running of the school. It was renamed The Methodist Girls' School, Kuala Lumpur. In 1910 Ms Mabel Marsh, a pioneer educationist, was assigned to take up the post of headmistress of the school. She is fondly regarded as the founder of The Methodist Girls' School of Kuala Lumpur as she was the longest serving pre-war Headmistress and for her dedication and tireless pursuits. The enrolment of the school started to increase which stood at 250. On the night of November 14,1914 a fire completely destroyed the school. A new building was opened in 1916 but when war broke out in 1941- 1945, the school was used as the Japanese Military Headquarters. The school reopened in 1945 after the war. In August 1950 the Senior Methodist Girls' School (MGSKL) was officially opened in its present premises and equipped with 7 classrooms, a library, domestic science needs, a general utility room to house the office and an assembly hall. In 1965 renovations were made to build Science laboratories and Pure Science classes were introduced. MGSKL became the first girls' school to have Sixth Form classes in 1970. In 2002, the school's ICT lab was opened in August through the efforts of the PTA. In 2003, the Knowledge-Based School (KBS) project was implemented in the school whereby ICT is the catalyst for learning and teaching and sharing knowledge to enhance teaching-learning in school. The school management system also went on-line. Early this year, 2009, the school administration took the initiative to introduce Google Apps (a collection of web-based programs which facilitates collaboration, peer review of academic materials, and the collective generation of knowledge) to the teachers, students and supporting staff of the school. The school reopened in 1945 after the war. 1950: In August the Senior Methodist Girls' School was officially opened in its present premises. 1956: With the consent from the Education authority, the Junior School was detached from the Senior School. 1965: When Mrs. Nellie Tan became Principal of the school, renovations were made to build science laboratories. Pure Science classes were started. 1970: Under the Principalship of Mrs F. R. Bhupalan, MGSKL became the first girls' school to have Sixth Form Classes. 1996: School's Centennial Celebration - There was overwhelming response to the dinner held on 4 August 1996. 2002: Through efforts of the Parent-Teacher Association, the School's ICT laboratory was opened in August. 2003: Principal Mdm Chia Loy Tian initiated the Knowledge-Based School (KBS) project whereby ICT is the catalyst of learning and teachers and students share knowledge to enhance teaching- learning in school. The School Management System also went online. 2004: The school was awarded the champion for Best School Website (www.mgskl.edu.my) at National Level. 2005: Under the encouragement of Mdm Chia, a successful gathering of ex-students was organized for a high-tea reunion in August and thereafter a Protem Committee of the MGSKL Alumni was formed. 2006; MGSKL 110th Anniversary Celebration 2009: MGSKL School's Vision renewed as follows, "A Knowledge-Based Premier School Towards Excellence by 2012". The school Blog and MGSKL Online Forum with the introduction of Google Apps (Virtual Classrooms) to the teachers, students and supporting staff took place. 2010: |
